There may be a tendency for people to use the terms "lean" and "Six Sigma" and even "lean Six Sigma" interchangeably. This useful article makes clear the differences between lean, reducing waste in the value stream, and Six Sigma, reducing variation in the process. As for the lean Six Sigma combination, the article draws on examples that demonstrate how the two approaches can form a very effective alliance. However, need for a lean culture as a foundation for any management tool is seen as essential to success: "...an overall culture of improvement that encourages a spirit of enquiry."
